What is a Pedelec?
- EU-Regulation 2002/24/EC
- Maximum assist power output of the motor is 250 W.
- It is only allowed that the motor assists the pedalling. That means the motor only works if you are pedalling.
- The assist power decreases progressively if the speed increases.
- The assist power stops completely at 25km/h.
Pedelec Parts
Driving Unit and controller system
- Brushless motor
- Controller
- Torque sensor
- Gear unit (transmission)
- Chain tensioner
- Main switch
- World patented Non-Contact Torque Sensor enable us to have light weight pedalling even if power is OFF.
- Light-weight structure (3.8Kg).
- 3 in 1 structure (motor, controller & torque sensor) to avoid electromagnetic waves.
What is power assist?
What is the difference between using different gears?
7 speed coaster brake hub
- 1st gear switch off at 14km/h
- 4th gear switch off at 18km/h
- 7th gear switch off at 24km/h

Contact free magnetic torque sensor
Advantage for contact-free magnetic torque sensor:
- No loss for transmission
- Still light pedalling after power off or flat battery
- World-wide patented (quick and accurate response to pedal torque)
Function of main switch:
The Panasonic Li-Ion battery
- High Energy Density
- No memory effect
- Voltage 26V
- Capacity 10Ah
- Watt hours 26V x 10 Ah = 260Wh
- Best condition to store the battery is at 15° C and 75% capacity
- Sleeping mode (50 % capacity 2 weeks / self discharge approx. 4 month)
- Recharge after 6 months if left idle
- Lifetime is 500 charge circles, approximately 3 to 4 years
Advantages of the Li-Ion battery
- Light Weight
Half weight compared to Ni-MH
- Large Capacity
Double Energy Density
- Simple Charging
No memory effect
No refresh charge
- Safety
Laminated System
Lithium Manganese
When you buy a Kalkhoff electric bike from Circuit Cycles it means that you can trust in the best, safest and most reliable battery technology available from Panasonic, a brand known worldwide for its quality and leadership in this field. Each battery comes with a 2-year warranty, something which is not the norm with electric bikes and which further emphasizes the confidence Panasonic have in their product. The battery pack also has a unique sleep mode function that protects against self-discharge when not in use.
Battery safety is of the utmost importance. The Lithium Manganese battery chemistry used by Panasonic is different to that used in standard Lithium ion and Lithium polymer batteries. These usually come with a Cobalt cathode. These battery types are prone to thermal runaway – i.e. explosion and fire. Manganese, unlike Cobalt, is a safe and a more environmentally benign cathode material. When deciding on what electric bike to buy always ask the retailer about battery safety and life expectancy, if they cannot guarantee that they use a Lithium Manganese battery then don’t buy it.

Which factors are responsible for the driving range?
- Topography
- Temperature
- Driving performance
- Technical condition of the bike
- Assist mode
- Battery condition
Test drive under normal conditions:
- Temperature: 16°C
- Wind speed: 0 km/h
- Average speed: 21km/h
- Assist mode: 1:1
- Drivers weight: 75kg + 12kg
=> Driving range: 80km
