Having changed jobs In June 2008, for Co-founder Barry, it meant for the first time he was commuting across Dublin City centre on a daily basis. The public transport options did not meet his needs and the 20 mile round trip was taking anywhere between 120 to 180 minutes in the car! Faced with a stressful and unpredictable commute Barry began to look for alternatives. It was during extensive research that Barry decided on a Kaklhoff Electric bike as the best transport option.
“With public transport not an option, and to avoid traffic congestion, the choice was really down to a Moped or Cycle. I considered buying a Moped until I discovered electric bikes. With an electric bike I would have all the health benefits of cycling without any costs of ownership such as tax, insurance and petrol that you have with a Moped. It was a big decision, since I hadn’t cycled since I was in school, but I felt safer than being on the moped. The great advantage of going with an electric bike over a push bike was that I had that pedal assist from the motor. I needed this since I was now going from 0 to100 miles a week on a bike!”
It looks like the decision paid off, nearly 4000 miles later with no problems, Barry is truly a convert to cycling and wouldn’t go back to his car.
“Apart from the great fuel savings, I have really noticed a difference in my well being. I arrive to work feeling great and I get home (on time!) with more energy to play with the children and do more in the evenings. Now that I am fitter I use the battery less than I did at the start, but I always know it’s there for days where I just want the fun of cycling without any great effort!”
Barry together with Co-Founder Liam, already a keen cycling enthusiast, decided to market these bikes in Ireland based on their rewarding experiences using them. They approached Derby Cycles in Germany, the largest manufacturer of bicycles in Europe and manufacturer of the Kalkhoff electric bikes range, about a dealership in Ireland. After several meetings with Derby Cycles, Barry and Liam were granted exclusive dealership in Ireland on all the Kalkhoff range including electric bikes. From there CircuitCycles was founded in February 2009, with the goal of providing exciting and innovative cycling products.
