‘When I see an adult on a bicycle, I do not despair for the future of the human race.’

H.G .Wells

The change has begun!

On the 25th May 2009 the Green Party launched the 10 Point Cycling plan. It follows recent publications by the government such as the National Cycle Policy Framework and the “Smarter Travel” policy. We are very pleased to see these publications and if all of these plans are realised then we truly have transformation achieved. Minister Eamon Ryan pointed out that that it will take strong leadership to make these policies a success and he noted that the Green Party will lead the way in these proposals. We would agree, leadership is what is required here, after all a good plan is only effective once well executed. It is worth highlighting some of the points with the greatest potential for impact in the 10 point plan;

Point 1 – Improving the bicycle lanes.

Safety is very important; a lot of potential cyclists are discouraged for safety reasons.

“With regard to infrastructure related factors a lack of road space for cyclists and poor road surfaces were rated as quite or very important reasons for not cycling by just over half of ‘car commuters’. 2005 Report by Galbraith J., Keegan, titled Attitudes of Cyclists and Car Commuters to Cycling in Dublin.

Point 3 – More places to Park.

It is clear that there is a despairing inadequacy with regards to parking bicycles in Dublin. It is a turn off and in particular for those who have higher end bicycles such as high performance bicycles and electric bikes.

Point 5 – City Bike Scheme.

This is a great way of promoting cycling as a very public and social activity. We advise diligence in the management of such a scheme as vandalism can negate any good will earned with the public.

Points 4,7,8 & 10 - Social impact

Never underestimate the impact of positive social interaction within society. Cycling is known to bring about these positive feelings as they create a sense of community including making people feel safe and comfortable.<–>
